چکیده
Characteristic features of resonant-tunneling diode (RTD) and a goal of RTD-based IC technology are discussed. Our recent results on RTD-based analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are then presented. These include designs of a 5-bit 10-GHz flash ADC and a bandpass continuous-time delta-sigma modulator with a center frequency of 500 MHz, which show high potential of RTD-based ultrahigh-speed circuits.

Resonant Tunneling Technology for Mixed Signal and Digital Circuits in the 10-100 GHz Domain
The inherent bistability and picosecond time-scale switching of the resonant tunneling diode (RTD) provides an ideal element for the design of digital circuits and analog signal quantizers in the 10-100 GHz domain. New differential RTD-based circuits for quantizers and a first-order Sigma-Delta modulator capable of operating at 10 GHz and beyond are

An ultrahigh-speed multiple-threshold comparator that consists of resonant-tunneling diodes (RTDs) and heterojunction FETs has been investigated. A novel multiple-threshold operation is obtained by detecting a switching sequence in a series-connected RTD circuit. SPICE simulation reveals that the present comparator operates at a clock frequency as high as 10 GHz. One FET at the input is enough ...
متن کاملNovel Resonant-Tunneling Multiple-Threshold Logic Circuit Based on Switching Sequence Detection
We present a novel multiple-threshold circuit using resonant-tunneling diodes (RTDs). The logic operation is based on detecting a switching sequence in the RTD circuit. This scheme enables us to increase the number of threshold voltages by more than a factor of two compared with previous RTD-based MVL circuits. SPICE simulation shows that the circuit can operate at a clock frequency as high as ...
متن کاملUltrahigh-speed Resonant-tunneling Analog-to-digital Converter
A flash analog-to-digital converter, consisting of resonant-tunneling ternary quantizers and ternary-to-binary encoder circuits, is proposed. SPICE simulation exhibits a possible 10-GHz operation with reduced device counts and power dissipation, which are due to its compact circuit configuration.
متن کاملFlash Analog-to-Digital Converter Using Resonant-Tunneling Multiple-Valued Circuits
We have proposed a flash analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that uses resonant-tunneling complex gates not only as ternary quantizers but also as ternary-to-binary encoder circuits. The ternary quantizers, consisting of monostable-to-multistable transition logic (MML) circuits, convert the analog input signal into the ternary thermometer code. This code is then converted into the binary Gray-cod...
